How do you explain “Sad History” to a 5-year-old?
Jeju Island is known for its stunning beaches and nature, but it also holds a tragic history known as the “Jeju 4.3 Incident” (a civilian uprising and massacre in 1948). As a parent, I struggled with how to explain this painful past to my children without traumatizing them.
The answer was the Jeju 4.3 Children’s Experience Hall. Instead of showing scary images, this place focuses on the value of “Peace” and “Hope.”
As an education specialist and mom of two (ages 8 and 5), here is my review of this meaningful and free indoor activity.

🕊️ Why Visit? (Education Expert’s View)
1. Perfect Storytelling for Kids
The main Jeju 4.3 Peace Memorial Hall (next door) is excellent but can be too graphic and scary for young children. My 5-year-old was frightened there.
However, the Children’s Experience Hall is different.
- It does not use violent imagery.
- It uses the Camellia Flower (a symbol of the 4.3 victims) to tell a story of healing.
- Target Age: Best for ages 6-11, but my 5-year-old also enjoyed the sensory activities.
- Concept: It focuses on the daily lives of children from that era, helping kids empathize rather than feel fear.

2. Sensory & Interactive Activities
It’s not just about reading. The hall offers various hands-on experiences:
- Sand Art: A beautiful way to express feelings.
- Mazes: Finding a way out (symbolizing finding hope).
- Bangsa-top Building: Stacking stones to build a traditional Jeju tower meant to ward off bad luck.
- Letter Writing & Coloring: Activities to wish for peace.
The tour takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, making it a perfect short stop.

🌳 The Outdoor Peace Park
Don’t leave right after the indoor hall. The outdoor park is vast and meaningful.
- Walk: It’s a peaceful place to walk with a stroller.
- Monuments: You can see the “Mother and Daughter” statue and thousands of memorial tablets.
- Surprise: There is even a section of the actual Berlin Wall displayed here, symbolizing global peace!

🍽️ Food Recommendation (Local’s Favorite)
Ssangdungi Sashimi Restaurant (Main Branch)
- Location: Seogwipo City (Note: This is on the south side of the island, about a 1-hour drive from the Peace Park. Good for dinner if you are heading south).
- Why: It’s a very famous spot known for its generous side dishes. Even if you order Sashimi (Raw Fish), they serve plenty of cooked food like pork cutlet, sushi, and grilled fish, so kids have plenty to eat.
- Verdict: Great value for money. They even give unlimited refills on some side dishes!

Final Verdict
If you want your children to learn about the importance of peace while in Jeju, this is a must-visit. It handles a heavy topic with a gentle, child-friendly touch.
- Educational Value: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Atmosphere: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Peaceful and Safe)
- Cost: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Free!)
